Composting Toilets

Composting Toilet History

Posted by Scott

The Ford Motor Company never claimed it invented the wheel, so why do some composting toilet companies claim they invented the composting toilet?

Envirolet® Composting Toilets have been around since 1977, but we know we didn’t invent composting toilets. We simply made a more efficient and better looking composting toilet!

We’re not sure why others try to claim they invented compost toilets, but Composting Toilet World has a little story about an early composting toilet from the 1860s. It was invented and patented by Rev. Henry Moule.

I am note sure if this is the first, but it is basically a self-contained composting toilet from the 1860s. It’s pretty cool.

As far as the idea of a compost or humus toilet, the Chinese are known to have used them for centuries!

Great Workmanship in Envirolet Basic Plus

Posted by Scott

Another quick note from a customer that we received today (September 6, 2005). Frank B. is a new customer from Massachusetts. His unit is installed in Maine. He writes:

“I recently received my Envirolet Non-Electric Waterless toilet - the workmanship is great! I am very impressed!

I have one question - there is a 3” black union coupling in the enclosed parts. Do I need to use this since I don’t have the electrical panel?”

Frank B.
Massachusetts, USA

See our answer to his question below.

Envirolet Basic Plus Composting Toilet
Envirolet® Basic Plus

Thank you Frank for noticing the quality of your Envirolet® Basic Plus System. We put a lot of care and effort to make sure the product you receive is top-notch.

This is what gives us the confidence to offer an industry leading Lifetime Warranty on the body and Four-Year Warranty on all internal components. And, unlike some other systems, there is actually something inside our system! Some systems out there are essentially empty shells. Envirolet® is full of engineered, quality components to compost efficiently.

To answer his question… Yes, you should use the 3” Union Coupling. The coupling allows for quick & easy vent diconnection, if required.

How is this different that a normal coupling? The Union Coupling is special because it allows the pipe to be connected, sealed and then easily disconnected. The coupling is made of thick, durable rubber. When compressed against the vent pipe using the stainless steel gear clamps an essential liquid and air tight seal is created.

These clamps then simply need to be loosened with a screwdriver for disconnection. Then the rubber coupling can be dropped downwards, allowing the vent to be removed.
