The HELP house to the Rescue

Posted by Scott

The HELP house is a basic 8’ x 12’ housing solution designed to help in emergency situations, such as the recent hurricanes in the United States. H.E.L.P. stands for Housing Every Last Person.

From the HELP web site:

“HELP is a prototype for immediate-response emergency housing that can be quickly assembled and transported wherever the need arises. Construction is of readily available panelized material allowing for a quick, low-cost housing solution.

It is designed to respond to varying existing conditions, such as access to or lack of running water, sewer, and electricity. It can operate in a self-sufficient manner, through the use of a gravity-fed water system, composting toilet, and solar power, and then switch over to the area’s infrastructure as it is rebuilt and made available.”

Unforntuantely, the designers are having trouble getting their design in to use. They cannot seem to get FEMA to look at their design.

That’s too bad because the HELP house is affordable (about $8,000) and uses sustainable technology (solar power, composting toilets and more!). If used in an emergency application, the house can be re-located when it is no longer needed, i.e., to the next emergency.

Why Plastic is Better Than Fiberglass

Posted by Scott

Envirolet® Composting Toilets System bodies and the Waterless Toilet body are made of durable polyethylene plastic. Some other compost toilet units out there are made from fiberglass.

Plastic offers many advantages over fiberglass. This why we switched our only fiberglass part (the old style waterless toilet) to plastic in 2000.

Why we manufacture with plastic:

• While not perfect, plastic is more environment-friendly than fiberglass.
• Plastic can be recycled. Any scrap material produced manufacturing is ground up and re-used. This saves material and money.
• Plastic is durable. Envirolet® is often installed in some harsh conditions so it needs to stand up to the elements. That is why there are still systems that have been in the field for well over 20 years. It is also why we offer a Lifetime Warranty on the body of the composting unit. We are confident it will not break in any element, including sub-zero temperatures.
• With plastic we are able to keep up with demand. When we manufactured with fiberglass (the waterless toilet pre-2000), we had trouble keeping up because fiberglass is a much slower process.
• Unlike fiberglass, plastic will not scratch or irriate skin upon contact. This refers to the inside, unfinished surface, or edges.
• Plastic is a much safer material to produce for both the environment and workers. If you have ever been to a fiberglass facility you will know what we mean.
• Plastic is odour-free, unlike fiberglass, which can have that “fiberglass smell” for some time.
• We can offer more unique colours in plastic.

Winterize Your Low Flush Toilet

Posted by Scott

SeaLand 510+ Low Flush Toilet For those of you in colder climates with Low Water Remote Systems, it is now time to start thinking about preparing your SeaLand® low water toilet for winter. Here are some things to do, in an un-heated bathroom:

• Drain (flush) all water out of the toilet before you leave.

• Wipe the bowl area dry with a paper towel or cloth before you leave. This includes the ceramic bowl area and the rubber seal.

• SeaLand® suggests removing the brass ring on the water valve. Removing the brass ring should protect against damage from part expansion temperature changes. Or, you can completely remove the water valve. Both of these suggestions will extend the life of the water valve, the most commonly replaced item on a SeaLand® low flush toilet. (If you do need one ever, get it from us. You will find out price for this item to be the cheapest you will find.)

One thing not to do is to add any type of anti-freeze. Some people do this with low flush toilets connected to septic tanks or holding tanks, but doing this with a composting toilet will harm the composting process.

Nothing has to be done with the actual composting unit. It is built to withstand freezing temperatures. That is why it has a Lifetime Warranty.

If you plan on using a low water system in the winter months, be sure to insulate all drain comnnections. Anywhere water travels needs to be insulated. Also, the composting unit or tank should also be protected and insulated in a winter box. A winter box can be as simple as a plywood box with Styrofoam insulation. Speak to a customer service rep if have questions.

Waterless systems do not require any winter preparation. There is no water, so no freezing to worry about.

Solar Decathlon on Now in Washington, DC

Posted by Scott

Greenthinkers reports that the 2005 Solar Decathlon is on now in Washington, DC from October 7-16. So you still have a few days to visit.

There are 18 teams competing, each with its own full size solar house on display in the Washington Mall. The teams had to build their houses locally (at their own school) and then transport the entire house for re-assembly in Washington.

We are of course cheering for the University of Colorado, who are the defending champions from the last competition in 2002, because they have an Envirolet® Composting Toilet in their house!

Buzz reported on the University of Colorado and Envirolet® in a previous post.

We hope to have some fresh photos from the competition when it is over.
