Outhouse Be Gone!

Richard from Minnesota sent us (June 27, 2006) some great comments and photos of his Envirolet® Waterless Remote System (120v) installed in his Wisconsin cabin.


“We installed our remote system at our cabin in Wisconsin last year and couldn’t be happier with it.

The installation took less then a day and was very easy.

In November of last year I broke my leg. Needless to say this restricted me. Our “outhouse” is 50 yards from our cabin and I could not hobble that far in the snow. We would have not been able to use our cabin in the winter if not for our new toilet.”

I was interviewed earlier this week for a little piece on CNN Money called The Scoop on Poop by Marc Gunther. Marc is a senior writer for FORTUNE magazine.

The story is about green technology and waste treatment. Composting toilets get a brief mention. Unfortunately, there is not a link to Envirolet®.

Thanks to Jim in Colorado for sending us his incredible photos and comments about his Envirolet MS10 Composting Toilet System. We’re very glad that his Envirolet has saved him from the threat of bears and mountain lions!


“My Envirolet “ROCKS.” There is nothing better than my Envirolet composting toilet, when I’m deep in the mountains, 150 yards from the outhouse with 2 feet of snow on the ground and the wood stove is blazing inside my mountain cabin.

Before my Envirolet, I would have to make that 150 yard trip during the middle of the night, not knowing if I would encounter one or more of our many bears and mountain lions. Now I just cozy up on my fantastic Envirolet Composter. I actually thought of moving back to civilization until I purchased my Envirolet and now I’m here to stay.

The Black Box

The electrical components in all 120VAC Electric models are now housed in the new & improved Envirolet® Black Box (Works-in-a-Drawer™). Electrical components include dual fans, heater and dual thermostats. It is conveniently located away from any waste material for easy access.

Envirolet® Black Box is the new name for the older Works-in-a-Drawer™. The major improvement is the addition of more environment-friendly fans (lead-free). The warranty was also extended by one year.

The Envirolet® Black Box is covered under the EnviroletCare™ 5-Year Warranty for internal components. This is the longest internal component warranty in the composting toilet industry.

Toronto's Waste

Lloyd at Treehugger discusss the Toronto to Michigan waste controversy and has an interesting solution:

“It is worth thinking about banning flush toilets and making composting toilets mandatory. We rarely think about where this stuff goes, other than….away. Until we have to deal with the fact that the stuff does not actually disappear when we flush the toilet we will continue to have a bizarre system where we truck sludge across borders, dump it on farmers fields and just pour it into rivers. The whole system stinks.”

The New Mulcherator

We reported on the new & improved Envirolet® Mulcherator cutting blades a while ago. Here are some new photos of what they look like.

Each Envirolet® System has 10 Mulcherator cutting blades in it. The Mulcherator helps aerate and break up waste and compost material.

The blades are made of tough, stainless steel. In the new blade design we have added a serrated edge for better cutting action.

Envirolet used as Reference in Google vs. Amazon Comparison

It’s fun to see where Envirolet® pops up.

It’s nice to be mentioned. Steve Sailer writes on iSteve.com:

“Compare the Google ads to Amazon’s listing of other books bought by buyers of the book you are looking at. For example, on the page for Steven Pinker’s The Blank Slate, Amazon’s lists three other books by Pinker, Richard Dawkins’ The Selfish Gene, and Robert Wright’s The Moral Sense. I suspect Amazon sells more product that way than Google sells Envirolet Compost Toilets advertising them on iSteve.”

I’ve yet to figure out why we were used as the comparison ad. But maybe we’ll sell a few Envirolet® Systems as a result of the mention on iSteve!

A nice little story in the The New York Times about sustainable second homes.

Second Homes That Put Ecology First
“Vacation homes have been sprouting throughout North America for 150 years or more. Now, these sprouts are becoming increasingly green, as a combination of good intentions, guilt and the quest for bragging rights spur owners of second homes to go green. Deterred by costs or logistics from retrofitting their primary homes, many are instead funneling their newfound eco-consciousness into their retreats. The shades of green range from using recycled materials in mountain hideaways to planning beach homes that sell power back to the electric company.

“We’re getting people doing million-dollar houses with composting toilets,” said John Abrams of South Mountain Company in Martha’s Vineyard, which designs and builds solar-paneled and salvaged-lumber second homes on an island that is sometimes better known for its sprawling energy-suckers.”
